Freelance Writing Through Freelancer

Welcome to my Office in Bolivia!

I more or less stumbled into freelance writing by accident a couple of months ago. My circumstances are perhaps different to most peoples, in that I am travelling around the world, and have now been on the road for seventeen months. During this time, it is fairly accurate to say that money has become a little thin! I am fortunate enough to run a couple of websites which bring in some modest income, but it really is not enough to sustain life on the road.

Then, I came across the Freelancer.com site. (By the way, if you sign up via this link and either hire or are hired, I may receive some small commission.. Thanks in advance!). This seemed to be a good way to earn a little extra money whilst keeping on the road.

The site is fairly good, although I will admit up front now that it is not perfect! Looking at it, I realised that I would have to take on a couple of lower paid writing gigs in order to get some much needed feedback. After that, I would be able to up my prices.

Now, it seems, that I have an advantage over a lot of writers that use the site. Firstly, English is my first language and at a far higher level than a lot of the writers and re-writers who advertise their services on the site. Secondly, I was travelling through Bolivia at the time, where the cost of living was extremely cheap. This meant that I could offer a good service at a low price initially.

Those first couple of freelance writing jobs went well, and receiving the feedback I wanted, I went on to take better paying jobs. It seems, that employers are desperate for good writers… that said, they don’t seem to want to pay a lot for their services, and you do, after all, get what you pay for in this world!

Fortunately, I developed contacts with four clients, and my work then progressed beyond the initial advertised projects. This is actually when I began to earn more serious money. Now being three months into my writing experiment, I see all sorts of possibilities, and have even employed other people through the site !

If you are thinking of attempting to earn some extra cash, then this might be a good place to do so. At the same time, if you are looking for writers, you may find people here to suit your needs (Or you could just message me directly of course!)

If you have any further questions, then leave them in a comment, as it is probably better to learn from my experiences than have to discover the pros and cons yourself with your own time.
